I used to go to Washington square a lot until Bourbon Street closed. It was my personal favorite eatery in Bangkok as I could get Cajun food that I love which I cannot get here in Australia. There also used to be a bar area on the corner of Asoke and Sukhumvit that had a kick boxing ring and several beer bars in it. You could walk through and out the back side onto soi 23 and have a very short walk to soi cowboy. I cannot remember the name of it however.

  2. nicholas scott says:

I was there and drank in silver dollar and lone star mainly. I also new mekong Kurt and taught with him ,very nice guy. I believe the snooker player(since deceased ) Paul hunter drank in Denny's bar. Thanks for the memories Pat.

  3. John .Mitch says:

Another Great video. I lived on Soi 22 back in the Mid 1980s, I took a walk up there in 2010 and by then it had changed beyond all recognition….lots of massage shops. I bet if I walk up there now I would find soi 22 has morphed into some place completely different again…. BKK is always morphing and changing, at the moment it seems to be multi storied shopping centres that are the trends

  4. Beng Melea says:

If you're familiar with CP chicken, in particular their Five Star Chicken and the franchise operators, they use to operate an office in Washington Square. I would teach English to the CEO at 7am for 2 hours before he started work. Didn't the Cabaret show move from there to the Asia Hotel before moving to Asiatique?

  5. John Ishii says:

Pat back in the day in the 60's my god father was the CIA station chief in BKK, my uncle CIA operative in Saigon and my father CIA Kuala Lumpur. Nothing but spooks those days and great stories.

  6. William ODell says:

I went to the Texas Lone Star back in the early 2000's to meet the legendary Mac Thompson. Mac had worked in the Vietnamese Refugee Camps all over Thailand and Laos. If you had a question about Thailand and Laos and Mac could not answer it then there was no answer. He was also very involved in the Thailand, Laos and Cambodia Brotherhood's assistance to schools in Northern Thailand and Laos. Pat: have you ever thought about doing a video about the hotels used by GI's on their R&R trips to Bangkok? I took 2 R&R trips to Bangkok when I was stationed at Udorn and another 2 R&R trips to Bangkok when I was stationed at DaNang. Each time I stayed at the King's Diamond Hotel on New Petchburi Road. It was a lovely little hotel that is no longer there. I miss it and those long ago days. Thank-you for the memories.

has anyone mentioned that beneath the movie theater was a place called Sao 16 where you could drink and dance with pretty girls? you had to buy them a garland in order to dance with them. never saw another farang there. there were also some great street food vendors at the mouth of the square. i lived in a few nearby places over the years and had some great times in WS. thanks for the memories!

  8. Paramjit says:

In the 70s "Washington Theater" was the theater in Prom Phong area where many International high school kids used to hang out which showed Hollywood and Chinese (from Hong Kong) movies. Hence, the name Washington Square after it was closed down. But the atmoshere was not as good as in Siam Square. Now I am waiting for EmSphere.

For some reason the YouTube algorithm pointed me to your Hua Lamphong video, so that's how i found this gem of a site.
I rented a room in Soi 22 for about 8 – 9 months back in late 1976 to 1977. About 200m down on the left hand side there was a bit of a rabbit warren of old wooden 2 storey buildings with about 20-30 rooms each – 200 baht a month. All sorts of different people living there – families, old, young, bar girls, factory workers etc. I was on the 2nd floor of one & all the rooms opened out onto a really wide (4m – 5m) central corridor, open at both ends, & this was were everyone socialized. A friend of mine was staying at the Starlight 22 Hotel & we would go up to the Cock n Bull to watch the movies. Good times.

  10. Step says:

So many memories came flooding back things smothered with gravy and Bourbon street free food… as well as some interesting movies seen at the theater way back, though why I ended up there that often is beyond me. Not having been back for decades really jarring to see the development, but got the twang of nostalgia and wanting it back when we saw the photos.

  11. jayaybe1 says:

Wow Pat! This is bringing back some memories. I moved into Srijinda Mansion when it first opened in 2005 I think. Believe me, those balconies are lethal! The wall is at a perfect height to tip you over the side. The balcony floor was smooth tiles and there was an outside sink on the balcony too. So, a combination of wet, soapy water, slippery tiles and a low balcony wall was a tragedy waiting to happen.

I got the phone number for the owner from someone who knew his family. I phoned him and complained. He was absolutely furious that I'd phoned him. I notice 16 years later, still no safety bar above the wall like you see on many buildings.

  12. Joey Clacton says:

A little glimpse of The Windsor Suites Hotel Soi 20.
    That’s my preferred hotel.
Although, I don’t think it’s going to be called that after it’s refit.

  13. Jon Canton says:

Amazing video, love your nostalgic Bangkok videos 🙂 I was down Soi 22 the last time I was in Bangkok just before the latest round of closures, was more than absolutely devastated when I turned up to the bar complex to discover it was gone, couldn't believe it. The place was affordable, original and raw, oh where has Bangkok gone!

  14. Only Fools & Buffalo Thailand says:

Why aye man take over done today pat good news for us/toon army mate.Great video pat good to see the channel growing you deserve it all the hard graft and effort you put in.

  15. Jimmyboy's Movies says:

there was something about the old bars that made them so special from the fairy lights to the country music and the girls who would always make you feel so welcome would have so much time for you. It was a great place Washington square !!!!! another mall and condo complex coming right up !!!! nooooooooooo. Great vlog pat stay safe

  16. Tokn Nomad says:

I hit the square for the first in 95 as I started my frequent work trips to BKK…while not an expat I spent 2-3 months a year in Thailand for the next 10 years so I was as close as it could get… it was a crazy place with an eclectic group of expats for sure. Bourbon street had good food as did the Dubliner. Great Shepards Pie. Leagues above the Londoner across the street on Soi 33… The quality of the girls was always pretty crappy but a fun place to have cheap beers with a Star Wars cantina scene group of people…we used it as our warm up and meeting place before all the work crew headed out on the town for deeper levels of debauchery …

  17. Geoff Botting says:

I used to see it, but never went in. I remember reading at the time that you needed to be careful about expressing certain opinions about certain topics, ie, the Vietnam War, communism, etc. when drinking there.

  18. MyThai says:

Never made it to Washington Square, regret that now i've read more about it. Thing was Nana was so good in the 90's we never ventured very far. Bars had real characters then. Great video, enjoyed it 👍.

  19. JEH says:

This is where the Thai government made another of many mistakes, It should have preserved Washington Square as a historical site, I have so many fond memories of it, I actually lived above the Bourbon St. Restaurant for 6 months in late 2001- early 2002. In 6 months, I never ever left that area, there was no reason too. That was the area I researched before coming to Thailand for the first time. Yes, I am old now and a Vietnam veteran, but for me it was perfect! Thanks for the great memories.
