Just depends on situation and time when deciding on Kodama or Nozomi. 2 hours is not bad so if you can use that 60 dollars for a nicer hotel then it's pretty good.

I have a Medical Alert Service Dog for my Hypoglycemia and Hypokalemia it's Heridetary and can cause dizzy spells, faint , vertigo and want to know with each place you go, what are their policies for having a Service Dog with you, and if they are accommodating or not for people with Service Dog. It would mean alot for me and many thinking to travel to Japan, but are worried and concerned of how we will be received and if the places don't let those with a Medical, Psychiatric or Service Dog in general in.

My hotel experiences in Japan have been positive. I’ve had inexpensive rooms. Although small were clean, bed comfortable, and quiet. In Osaka I rented one within walking distance from my son’s new apartment. It was about $55 a night (taxes included in that price), king bed, and with that price was with a Japanese breakfast. Complimentary Instant coffee and teas in the lobby, all toiletries, and pajamas. Even a latte machine in the lobby for 100 yen. So, do not be embarrassed by a$40 room. I rented 3 nights in Kyoto . I think it was with taxes about $200, for 2 people. Again super clean comfy room, small, with 2 double beds. You should be proud to show us. Most of us would like a clean room like this one at an affordable price. This information will help us plan for future trips. (I travel for my job, lots of Hilton, Westin, Sheraton, Hyatt stays, these small rooms were very efficient,cleaner in most cases, and comfortable). Thank you again Rion. People with the JR pass can just take the SAKURA which is JR West/Kyushu's equivalent to HIKARI.
